Warm, tender granny smith apples wrapped in pastry, sprinkled with cinnamon, and soaked in a sweet, buttery sauce. Top with a good quality vanilla ice cream and these apple dumplings will easily become a favorite!
Peel and cut each apple into 8 pieces. Cut the crescent rolls according to package directions and wrap an apple slice in each dough.
Butter a 9×13 baking dish and place the wrapped apple dumplings. Set aside.
In a saucepan, melt the butter then add sugar and vanilla. Stir a little just to combine. Bring to a boil then turn off the heat. The mixture should be lumpy and grainy.
Pour the butter-sugar-vanilla mixture over the top of the dumplings, making sure to coat them thoroughly.
Pour the soda. It will be soupy but it’s gonna thicken up like a syrup after baking.
Sprinkle with cinnamon on top and bake at 350 F/ 175 C for about 30-45 minutes. The tops should be slightly crispy and golden brown.
Best eaten at warm temperature with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Pour a bit of sauce over the top.
