Why You’ll Love This Whipped Butter

  • Smooth & Spreadable: Whipping adds air, making the butter light and easy to spread, even straight from the fridge.
  • Customizable Flavor: Add herbs or honey for a personalized touch.
  • Simple & Quick: Takes less than 5 minutes to make with ingredients you likely have on hand.

Ingredients & Substitutions

Shop efficiently (treat this as your grocery list) and gather your ingredients at home without running circles in your kitchen. (i.e. One trip to the fridge to get all your dairy needs.)

REFRIGERATED:

  • milk. 2 tablespoons milk, whole or skim milk is ok.
  • butter. 113g (½ cup) of unsalted butter, softened. Softened butter is essential for achieving that fluffy, whipped texture, so make sure it’s not too cold. You can also use salted butter but omit the salt below.

PANTRY:

  • salt. ¼ teaspoon fine salt. I use sea salt.

Let’s Make Whipped Butter Step-by-Step

STEP 1. Whip the Butter: Place the softened butter and milk in a mixing bowl. Softened butter is essential for achieving that fluffy, whipped texture, so make sure it’s not too cold.

Using an electric hand mixer or stand mixer with a whisk attachment, whip the softened butter on medium speed for a minute or two. Scrape the sides of the bowl and add in the milk and continue mixing on high speed for additional 2 to 3 minutes or until light in color (near white) and fluffy.

STEP 2. Season and Flavor: Add salt, or any flavoring you’d like (fresh garlic, chives, parsley, etc), and whip briefly to combine.

STEP 3. Serve/ Store: Transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to a week. Return to room temperature before serving.

Tips for Restaurant-Style Whipped Butter

To really capture that restaurant-style experience, here are a few pro tips and serving ideas:

  • Serve in Small Ramekins or Butter Dishes: Spoon your whipped butter into small ramekins or butter dishes for an elegant presentation. Sprinkle a touch of flaky sea salt on top or add a drizzle of honey or olive oil for extra flair.
  • Chill and Whip Again Before Serving: For the best texture, you can chill the whipped butter for 10-15 minutes, then give it a quick whip just before serving. This extra step makes it even lighter and fluffier.
  • Flavor Pairings for Every Occasion:
    • Sweet Cinnamon Honey Butter: Add 1 tablespoon of honey and a pinch of cinnamon to your whipped butter for a spread that’s fantastic on breakfast breads, pancakes, and muffins.
    • Garlic Herb Butter: Mix in minced garlic, fresh parsley, and chives for a savory butter that’s perfect for dinner rolls or melting over a warm steak.
    • Maple Sea Salt Butter: For a subtle sweet and salty combination, add a splash of pure maple syrup and a sprinkle of sea salt. This one’s delicious on cornbread or toasted baguette slices.
  • Presentation Tip: After whipping, use a piping bag to create attractive swirls or dollops of butter on individual plates for each guest. This is a simple way to elevate the look and feel of your table, just like a fine-dining restaurant!
